Finished Circumference: 22” (56 cm)
Gauge: 11 sts = 4” (10 cm); 8 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in hdc with A. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain gauge.Special Abbreviation

dec (decrease) = [yarn over and draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loop on hook.

CLOCHE

Brim

Row 1 (Right Side): With A, ch 7; sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 6 sc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (does NOT count as a st), working in back loops, hdc in first sc and in each sc across; turn.

Row 3: Ch 2, working in back loops, hdc in first hdc and in each hdc across; turn.

Repeat Row 3 until brim is 22” (56 cm) long.

Crown

Ch 1, work 60 sc across one long edge; join with a slip st to first sc to form a circle.

Place marker in first st of round. Do not join but work in continuous rounds, moving marker up each round.

Round 1: Hdc in first sc and in each sc around – 60 hdc.

Round 2: Hdc in first hdc and in each hdc around.

Repeat Round 2 until piece measures 4½” (11.4 cm) from lower edge.

Shape Crown

Next Round: [Hdc in 3 hdc, dec] 12 times – 48 hdc.

Work 2 rounds even.

Next Round: [Hdc in 2 hdc, dec] 12 times – 36 hdc.

Work 2 rounds even.

Next Round: [Hdc in hdc, dec] 12 times – 24 hdc.

Work 2 rounds even.

Next Round: [Dec] 12 times – 12 hdc.

Next Round: [Dec] 6 times; join with a slip st in next st – 6 hdc. Fasten off.

Weave yarn end through last 6 sts and draw top closed. Sew brim seam. Weave in loose ends.

Flower

Cut a 1½ yd (1.4 m) length of B. Thread a 12” (30.4 cm) piece of A on a yarn needle. Weave A through top holes of B, gathering gently and forming into layered circular ruffles. Knot to secure. Tack to hat.
