Vested Panda Ornament

This adorable panda is dressed in his finest for the holiday festivities! Make a variety of vests in different colors for a whole family of happy pandas.

Required Supplies:
  • RED HEART® Sport®: 1 skein each 1 White A, 12 Black B, and 912 Cherry Red C (Sport is discontinued)
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hooks: 3.25mm [US D-3] and 4mm [US G-6]
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker

Additional Supplies Needed:

Two 10 mm safety eyes

three ¼” [6 mm] buttons for vest

black and white hand sewing thread

black embroidery thread and embroidery needle

stuffing

GAUGE: 24 sts = 4″ [10 cm]; 22 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in sc with smaller hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Panda measures 8½” [22 cm] tall.
Special Abbreviations

inc (increase) = 2 sc in next sc.

dec (decrease) = draw up a loop in next 2 sts, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
PANDA

Eye Patch (Make 2)

With smaller hook and B, ch 7; hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, (hdc, ch 1, sc) in last ch, working on opposite side of ch, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 4 ch. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Head

Round 1: With smaller hook and A, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join but work in continuous rounds. Mark first st and move marker up each round.

Round 2: [Inc] 6 times – 12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, inc] 6 times – 18 sc.

Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, inc] 6 times – 24 sc.

Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, inc] 6 times – 30 sc.

Round 6: [Sc in next 4 sc, inc] 6 times – 36 sc.

Rounds 7-13: Sc in each sc around.

Round 14: [Sc in next 4 sc, dec] 6 times – 30 sc.

Round 15: [Sc in next 3 sc, dec] 6 times – 24 sc.

Round 16: Sc in each sc around.

Round 17: [Sc in next 2 sc, dec] 6 times – 18 sc.

Round 18: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc.

Referring to photo for placement, sew eye patches to face with black thread. Insert safety eyes through eye patch and head layer.

Stuff head firmly. Continue stuffing as rounds are completed.

Round 19: Sc in each sc around.

Round 20: Dec, sc in next 8 sc, dec – 10 sc.
Round 21: Sc in each sc around. Fasten off.

Using black floss and embroidery needle embroider nose in triangular shape over nose tip.
Body

With smaller hook and A, ch 12; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Sc in each ch around; do not join but work in continuous rounds as before – 12 sc.

Round 2: [Sc in next sc, inc] 6 times – 18 sc.

Round 3: Sc in each sc around.

Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, inc] 6 times – 24 sc.

Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, inc] 6 times – 30 sc.

Rounds 6-15: Sc in each sc around.

Round 16: [Sc in next 3 sc, dec] 6 times – 24 sc.

Round 17: [Sc in next 2 sc, dec] 6 times – 18 sc. Stuff firmly.

Round 18: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc.

Round 19: [Dec] 6 times – 6 sc. Fasten off.

Weave yarn end through remaining sts to close hole.
Legs (Make 4)

Round 1: With smaller hook and B, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join.

Round 2: [Inc] 6 times – 12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, inc] 6 times – 18 sc.

Rounds 4-6: Sc in each sc around.

Round 7: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc. Stuff paw firmly.

Rounds 8-21: Sc in each sc around, stuffing lightly as rounds are completed.

Round 22: [Sc in next sc, dec] 4 times – 8 sc.

Fasten off leaving yarn tail for attaching to body.
Ears (Make 2)

Rounds 1 and 2: Work same as Legs Rounds 1 and 2. Fasten off leaving yarn tail for attaching to head.
Tail
Round 1: With smaller hook and B, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join.

Round 2: 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc.

Fasten off leaving yarn tail for attaching to body.
FINISHING

With yarn tail from neck opening and tapestry needle sew head to neck securely. Using photo as a guide, attach ears, legs and arms with yarn ends.
VEST

With larger hook and C, ch 4.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch; turn – 3 sc.

Rows 2-25: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc across; turn.

Row 26 (Right Side): Ch 1, work 26 sc evenly spaced across row ends; turn.

Rows 27-30: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Divide- Left Front-Row 31: Ch 1, sc in first 5 sc; TURN.

Rows 32-33: Ch 1, sc in 5 sc; turn.

Row 34: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec; turn – 3 sc.

Row 35: Ch 1, sc in 3 sc. Fasten off leaving yarn end for shoulder seam.
Back

Next Row: With wrong side facing, skip next 2 sc of last long row; join yarn in next sc; ch 1, sc in same sc and in next 11 sc; turn – 12 sc.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Next Row: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 9 sc, dec; turn – 10 sc.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Next Row: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 7 sc, dec; turn – 8 sc. Fasten off leaving yarn end for shoulder seam.
Right Front

Next Row: With wrong side facing, skip next 2 sc of last long row; join yarn in next sc; ch 1, sc in same sc and in next 4 sc; turn – 5 sc.

Next 2 Rows: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Next Row: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec; turn – 3 sc.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in 3 sc. Fasten off leaving yarn end for shoulder seam.
Edging

Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing and larger hook, join C at lower right corner of ribbing; ch 1, sc evenly up right front, around neck and down left front. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Collar

With larger hook and C, ch 7.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 6 sc.

Rows 2-15: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc across; turn. Fasten off at end of Row 15 leaving yarn end for attaching collar to vest.

Pin middle of collar to middle of neck on vest.

Sew collar to neck using yarn end. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
FINISHING

Sew buttons evenly spaced to 1 side edge of vest opening with needle and thread. One loop of the corresponding sc from the opposite lapel can serve as button loop.
