Blue Butterfly Dishcloth

Skill: Easy

Size: About 8½” square

Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton: Blue – 1 oz, 50 yd (30 g, 46 m); White – 1 oz, 50 yd (30 g, 46 m); Variegated – 1 oz, 50 yd (30 g, 46 m)(Sugar ‘n Cream – Hot Blue, White, Swimming Pool)

Yarn Needle

Crochet Hook:
Size I-9 (5.50 mm)

To Change Colors

Work last stitch before color change to last step, with new color, yo and pull new color through remaining lps on hook. Drop unused color to wrong side. Do not work over unused color.

JOINING WITH SC

When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

DISHCLOTH

Rnd 1:
(Right Side) With Variegated, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), 2 dc in ring, change to White, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, change to Variegated, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, change to White, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, change to Variegated, ch 2; join with sl st to first dc. (12 dc and 4 ch-2 sps) Finish off Variegated only (NOT Background) and weave in ends.

Rnd 2:
With right side facing, insert hook in ch-2 sp by rem White yarn end, draw up lp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * change to Variegated, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, change to White, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around; join. (26 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps and 2 ch-1 sps) Finish off White and weave in ends. (Corner has 3 dc of White and 2 dc of Variegated)

Rnd 3:
Draw up Variegated through ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, * change to White, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next next ch-2 sp, change to Variegated, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around; join. (40 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps and 4 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 4-5:
Work in established color, pattern st and corner patter, working (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp to corner of White section and dc in each st of Variegated section, on each round, fasten off joining yarn and use rem yarn end to start the next rnd. (68 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 8 ch-1 sps – 19 dc across each wing of Variegated, 4 ch-1 sps across each White section.

Rnd 6:
Draw up lp of White through ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, * [3 dc in next st or ch, ch 1, skip next 3 sts] across to next corner ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, skip next 3 sts; rep from * around; join. Finish off and weave in ends. (20 ch-1 sps and 4 corner ch-2 sps)

Rnd 7:
With right side facing, join Blue in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next sp, ch 1] across to next corner ch-2 sp, * (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next sp, ch 1] across to next corner ch-2 sp; join. Finish off and weave in ends. (24 ch-1 sps and 4 corner ch-2 sps) Finish off and weave in ends.

Butterfly Body

Rnd 1:
(Right Side) With Blue ch 9, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 ch, 3 sc in last ch; working in unused lps of starting ch, sc in next 7 ch; join with sl st to first sc. Finish off leaving long end.

Antennae

Cut a 4” length of Blue. Fold in half. Insert hook in center sc of 3-sc group, draw fold through to form lp on hook, draw cut end through lp on hook and pull gently to secure. Knot each end of antennae length ½” from body. Trim excess ends.

– Using long end and yarn needle, sew Body between wings over Rnd 1.
