Kids will love wearing this crocheted hood style hat. The ears make it extra cute and perfect for playtime imagination. A hidden snap makes it easy to put on, but harder to lose at recess!

Materials:

RED HEART® Soft® Essentials: 2 balls 7305 Biscuit

Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8] and 6.5mm [US K-10½]

Stitch markers

Yarn needle

¾” [19mm] metal snap, matching sewing thread and needle

Gauge/Tension: 10 hdc = 4″ [10 cm]; 8 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in half double crochet using larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Child’s Size

Hat circumference at neck edge: 20″ [51 cm]

This hoodie is designed slip over the head and to have a comfortable loose fit like the hood of a sweatshirt.

Because of the loose fit the hoodie can fit a variety of wearers from ages 6 years and up.

NOTES

Hoodie is worked flat in a rectangular shape, beginning with a band of crocheted ribbing that frames face.

Bottom/neck edge is slightly angled up from front of hoodie to back of head.

Back of head is completed in the round for a few rounds and then opening is sewn closed.

Neck edging is along row ends of the piece. A small front flap overlaps and is closed with a snap.

Ears are worked first and are incorporated into rows of Hoodie as it is being worked.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

hdc2tog: [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

sc2tog: [Draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

HOODIE

EARS (make 2)

With smaller hook, ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next ch, 2 sc in next ch – 6 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each st across – 12 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 6 times – 18 sts.

Row 4: Ch 1, turn piece to work along opposite edge of foundation ch, 2 sc in each ch across, leave remaining sts unworked – 8 sts.

Row 5: Ch 1, turn piece to work along unworked 18 sts of Row 3, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 6 times – 24 sts.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts along lower edge of Ear, turn to work along upper edges of Ear, ch 1, working in front loops only, slip st in next 24 sts, slip st in first slip st to join. Cut yarn.

Repeat for second Ear. Secure loop of last st with safety pin to prevent unraveling.

HOODIE

Rib

With larger hook, ch 4.

Row 1: Working in back loops only, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across – 3 sts.

Row 2-59: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across. Do not fasten off.

Main Body

Row 60: Turn to work along long edge of rib, ch 1, sc 61 sts evenly spaced across length of Rib – 61 sts. Fasten off.

Mark as right side.

Row 61 (Right Side): Ch 3, with right side facing, join yarn to front loop only of first st of Row 60 with a slip st, working in front loops only, slip st in remaining 60 sts, ch 3.

Row 62: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 3 ch, working in unworked loops of previous row, sc in each ch across to last 3 ch, sc in last 3 chs – 67 sc.

Row 63: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc here and throughout), turn, skip first sc, hdc in next 64 sts to last 2 sts, hdc2tog – 65 sts.

Row 64: Ch 2, turn, skip first st, hdc in next 62 sts, hdc2tog – 63 sts.

Attach Ears

Row 65: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 20 sts, with right side facing, line up 8 sts of one Ear with next 8 sts of Hoodie, working through both layers and

working through front loops of Hoodie and both loops of Ear, sc in next 8 sts to join, sc in next 7 sts of Hoodie, with right side facing, line up 8 sts of second Ear with next 8 sts of Hoodie, working through both layers and working through front loops of Hoodie and both loops of second Ear, sc in next 8 sts to join, sc in remaining 20 sts across – 63 sts.

Row 66: Ch 2, turn, skip first st, hdc in next 19 sts, hdc in unworked loops of next 8 sts of Hoodie, hdc in next 7 sts, hdc in unworked loops of next 8 sts, hdc in next 18 sts, hdc2tog – 61 sts.

Row 67: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across – 61 sts.

Row 68-73: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across for 6 rows.

Row 74: Ch 2, turn, hdc in next 28 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, hdc in next 28 sts – 59 sts.

Row 75: Ch 2, turn, hdc in 27 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, hdc in next 27 sts – 57 sts.

Row 76: Ch 2, turn, hdc in 26 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, hdc in next 26 sts – 55 sts.

Row 77: Ch 2, turn, hdc in 25 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, hdc in next 25 sts. Fasten off, leaving long end.

Shape Back of Hoodie

With right side facing, mark 4th st from each edge along last row worked to mark center 45 sts. Back of Hoodie will be worked in rounds.

Round 78: With right side facing, join yarn in next st after first marked st with a slip st, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next 19 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, hdc in next 20 sts, slip st in top of beginning ch-2 to join – 43 sts.

Round 79: Ch 1, skip next 2 sts, [hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 sts] twice, hdc in next 11 sts, [hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 sts] twice, hdc2tog, do not join – 36 sts.

Round 80: Ch 1, skip next 2 sts, [sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog] twice, sc in next 8 sts, [sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts] 2 times, sc2tog – 31 sts.

Fasten off, leaving a long end. Fold last round flat and sew closed.

Using long end from Row 77, sew 8 unworked sts of Row 78 at neck edge closed.

Sew short edges of Rib together for face opening.

Neck Edging

Row 1: With right side facing, skip first 3 sts at neck edge under Rib, join yarn with slip st in first row end at neck edge of Row 61, ch 1, sc in same space, 3 sc in next space, sc 34 sts evenly spaced across row ends of neck edge, ending at opposite row end of Row 61, 3 sc in next

space, sc in last space – 42 sts.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 36 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, slip st in next space – 46 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 38 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, slip st in next space – 50 sts. Fasten off.

Row 4: With right side facing, join yarn with slip st in back loop of first st directly below Rib, ch 2, (counts as first hdc, working in back loop only, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next 2 sts, [hdc in 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st] twice, hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc next 3 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, [2 hdc in st, hdc in next 5 sts] twice, hdc in last 5 sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.

Sew corresponding sides of snap to front flaps so flaps overlap.
