Halloween Pirate Free Crochet Pattern

RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each 312 Black A, 319 Cherry Red D and 316 Soft White C

Susan Bates® Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm [US I-9], 6.5mm [US K-10½] and 4mm [G-6]

Release his inner swashbuckler with these accessories for the pirate in your life! Cap, belt and eye patch are all very easy to crochet for Halloween fun. ARGGGHHH!

Gauge/Tension:     GAUGE: Hat: 11 sc = 4″ [10 cm]; Rounds 1-5 = 3½” [9 cm] across with medium hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge. Gauge not critical for eye patch and sash/ belt.

One Sash and Eye Patch size fits most men. Hat circumference: 24” [61 cm].

Special Stitches

inc (increase) = 2 sc in next sc.

dec (decrease) = draw up a loop in next 2 sc, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

tr-sc = [yo] twice and draw up a loop in st indicated, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, insert hook in indicated  st of working row and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 3 loops on hook.

Cross = skip 4 sts, tr-sc in front loop of sc 3 rows below, completing it in first skipped st of working row, sc in next 3 sc of working row; working in front of previous tr-sc, work tr-sc in front loop of first skipped st of sc 3 rows below, completing it in next st of working row.

Note:

The st in which the Cross is started is in color A. Skip the working row and 2 more rows.

HAT

Round 1: With medium hook and A, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Do not join but work in continuous rounds. Place stitch marker in first st of round and move up each round.

Round 2: [Inc] 6 times—12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, inc] 6 times—18 sc.

Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, inc] 6 times—24 sc.

Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, inc] 6 times—30 sc.

Round 6: [Sc in next 4 sc, inc] 6 times—36 sc.

Round 7: [Sc in next 5 sc, inc] 6 times—42 sc.

Round 8: [Sc in next 6 sc, inc] 6 times—48 sc.

Round 9: [Sc in next 7 sc, inc] 6 times—54 sc.

Round 10: [Sc in next 8 sc, inc] 6 times—60 sc.

Round 11: [Sc in next 9 sc, inc] 6 times—66 sc.

Rounds 12-24: Sc in each sc around, do not fasten off.

Hat Band/Tie

Row 25: With largest hook, ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in front loops only of each sc across; turn—106 sc.

Row 26: Ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in each sc across; turn—146 sc.

Rows 27-31: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Fasten off at end of Row 31.

Cross Bones (Make 2)

With smallest hook and C, ch 2; 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook; slip st in first sc of 4-sc group, ch 11, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st in next 9 ch. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Skull

Row 1: With smallest hook and C, ch 3; 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in last ch; turn—3 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc; turn—5 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] twice; turn—7 sc.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 4 sc, skip 1 sc, sc in last sc; turn—5 sc.

Row 7: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in next 2 sc, skip 1 sc, sc in last sc; turn—3 sc. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

FINISHING

With yarn needle and strand of C, place bones in an “X” configuration and sew to hat as shown. Layer skull over cross bones and sew to hat. With yarn needle and A, embroider skull face details as shown. Weave in ends.

BELT/SASH

Row 1: With larger hook and D, ch 186; sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn—185 sc.

Work in back loops throughout.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2 changing to A in last sc.

Fasten off D.

Row 5: Repeat Row 2 changing to D in last sc.

Fasten off A.

Row 6: Repeat Row 2.

Row 7: Repeat Row 2 changing to A in last sc.

Fasten off D.

Row 8: Ch 1, work 37 Cross across changing to D in last st; turn. Fasten off A.

Rows 9-12: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Fasten off at end of Row 12.

EYE PATCH

Row 1: With medium hook and A, ch 5; sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn—4 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc; turn—6 sc.

Rows 3 and 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, ch 40 for tie. Fasten off. Join A to first sc of Row 5; ch 40. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
