Special Stitch

sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) = [Draw up a loop in next st] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.Special Technique

Adjustable-ring method—Wrap yarn into a ring, ensuring that the tail falls behind the working yarn. Grip ring and tail between middle finger and thumb. Insert hook through center of ring, yarn over (with working yarn) and draw up a loop. Work stitches of first round in the ring. After the first round of stitches is worked, pull gently on tail to tighten ring.

Notes

1. Gauge is not critical for this project. Work tightly so stuffing does not show through stitches.

2. When you reach a pompom, guide it gently to the right side of the fabric and continue to crochet with the unadorned sections of yarn.

3. Pieces begin with an adjustable ring. Take care to begin with a length of yarn that does not have any pompoms. If preferred, you can work a ch 2 and work the stitches of the first round into the 2nd ch from hook.

POM-MONSTER

Cut a pompom from the yarn (for nose) leaving a tail on each side of the pompom for tying nose to face.

Beginning at top of head, make an adjustable ring.

Round 1 (right side): Work 7 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rounds (spiral)—7 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—14 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 7 times—21 sc.

Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 7 times—28 sc.

Rounds 5–9: Sc in each sc around.

Decide where you want the front to be. Select an area with the least number of pompoms. Remove the beginning of round marker. Using photograph as a guide, determine nose placement and tie reserved pompom in place. Hide the knot inside the monster. Attach safety eyes to face on either side of pompom nose.

Dividing Round (divide for legs): Sc in each sc to the center of the front, ch 4 (for between legs), skip next 14 sc (for second leg), sc in next 14 sc (for first leg), place marker in first and last sc of the 14 sc just made. You are now ready to work in rounds over the ch-4 and the 14 sc just worked. Replace the beginning of round marker. Do not move the Dividing Round markers until instructed to remove them. They will be used when working the second leg.

First Leg

Round 1: Sc in one loop of each ch of the ch- 4, sc in next 14 sc—18 sc.

Rounds 2 and 3: Sc in each sc around.

Round 4: Working in back loops only, [sc in next sc, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sc.

Slip st in next st and fasten off leaving a long tail. Stuff body and first leg. Weave tail through stitches of last round and pull to close opening. Weave in end.

Second Leg

Note: Sc2togs are worked at the beginning and end of the dividing ch-4 to reduce gapping.

Round 1: Join yarn with sc in first skipped sc of divide, sc in next 13 sc, insert hook in same st as marked sc of Dividing Round and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook); working in free loops of the ch-4, insert hook in first ch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook, sc in next 2 ch, insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop, insert hook in same st as next marked sc of Dividing Round and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook; do not join, work in continuous rounds (spiral)—18 sc. Remove Dividing Round markers. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.

Rounds 2 and 3: Sc in each sc around.

Round 4: Working in back loops only, [sc in next sc, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sc.

Slip st in next st and fasten off leaving a long tail. Stuff leg. Weave tail through stitches of last round and pull to close opening. Weave in end.

ARMS (make 2)

Make an adjustable ring.

Round 1: Work 9 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rounds (spiral)—9 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.

Round 2: Working in back loops only, sc in each sc around.

Rounds 3 and 4: Sc in each sc around.

Slip st in next stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff arms lightly and sew to monster. Use the long tail for sewing or use strong, matching sewing thread if preferred.

FINISHING

Weave in any remaining ends.
