Size: 22” (55 cm) around

Materials: Bulky Weight Yarn-Coats & Clark TLC Macaroon ® Salt and Pepper (MC) 1.5 oz (42 g) Patons ® Divine Deep Earth (CC) 16 yards (14.5 m)

Crochet Hook: Size N-13 (9mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Special Stitches

Double Crochet Decrease (dc dec):

Keeping last loop of each st on hook, dc in next 2 sts, yo and pull through 3 loops on hook.

Pattern

Hat

Rnd 1 (right side): Starting at top of hat, with MC, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout), work 11dc in ring; join with sl st in first dc.  Join Rnds 1-9 in this manner.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same dc as joining, 2 dc in each st around, join. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, join. (30 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 4 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc) around, join. (36 dc)

Rnds 5-9: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, join. (36 dc)

First Ear Flap

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in next 5 dc. (6 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in next dc, dc dec, dc in next 2 dc. (5 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in next dc, dc dec, dc in next dc. (4 dc)

Row 4: Ch 3, turn, dc dec, dc in next dc.

(3 dc) Finish off.

Second Ear Flap

Row 1: With right side facing, skip next 16 dc of Rnd 9, join MC with a sl st in next dc, ch 3, dc in next 5 dc. (6dc)

Rows 2-4: Rep Rows 2-4 of First Ear Flap.

Finishing

With CC, ch 25 (for tie), join with sl st in center dc of Row 4 of either Ear Flap, sc around entire outside edge of Ear Flaps and Hat Rnd 9; join with sl st in first sl st.

Finish off.

Opposite Tie: With right side facing, join CC with sl st in center dc of Row 4 of opposite Ear Flap, ch 25. Finish off and weave in ends.

Pom-Pom

Cut cardboard 4” square. Wrap CC around square 10 times (see Fig 1). Slip yarn off square and firmly tie a 12” piece around middle (see Fig 2). Leave the yarn ends long to attach the pom-pom. Cut loops at each end and trim to a 4” smooth ball.

    Thanks Maggie for continuing with the free patterns. I always look forward to seeing the next one. I am going to make this for my granddaughters. I will have to use a smaller hook for them as they are young. Again, thank you!!

    I was so elated to see that you will be featuring free hat patterns now!! I am not much into crocheting dishcloths, although I did copy a few of those patterns, but love doing hats. Just started crocheting again after years of not doing any, and have done 10 hats and 4 scarves since Thanksgiving! All my grandkids and their friends seem to be wearing them these days! Thank you, thank you!

    I am looking for a great crochet pattern for men’s hat/cap which mature men can wear comfortably. Not sure if this one works, so is there another which is not too complex? I’m doing this one x 5 for both male and female snowboards in the family. THANKS big time for this one.
