This pompom-topped hat makes crocheting an ombré effect with your favorite color family a breeze!

Materials:

RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each 0400 Grey Heather A, 387 Soft Navy B, 3945 Blue Suede C, 381 Light Blue D, and 311 White E

Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]

Stitch marker

Yarn needle

Gauge/Tension:     11 dc = 4″ [10 cm]; 6 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in double crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Hat circumference at bottom edge: 20 (22)” [51 cm (56) cm]

Directions are for size Small; changes for sizes Large are in parentheses.

NOTE

Hat is worked in joined rounds with right side facing throughout. Carry color not in use along wrong side of work.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

dc2tog: [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook

dc3tog: [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 3 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook

Fpdc: (front post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice. Skip st behind the Fpdc.

Shell: Work 5 dc in same stitch or space.

HAT

With A, ch 54 (60), taking care not to twist sts, slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Place marker for beginning of round.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each chain around, slip st in top of beginning ch-3 to join – 54 (60) dc.

Rounds 2-4: Ch 3, Fpdc in next st, *dc in next st, Fpdc dc; repeat from * around, slip st in top of beginning ch-3. Do not cut A.

Round 5: Change to B, ch 1, sc in same st, *skip 2 sts, Shell in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * around to last 5 sts, skip 2 sts, Shell in next st, skip 2 sts, slip st in first sc. Cut B.

Round 6: Change to A, ch 3, dc in st below first sc on Round 4, *ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of Shell, ch 2, 2 dc in st below next sc on Round 4; repeat from * around to last Shell, ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of Shell, ch 2, slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 7: Ch 2, dc in next st (counts as dc2tog), *dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next sc, dc in each of next 2 ch, dc2tog; repeat from * to last 5 sts, dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next sc, dc in each of next 2 ch, slip st in first dc.

Round 8: Change to C and repeat Round 5. Cut C.

Round 9: Change to A, ch 3, dc in corresponding st in round below first sc, *ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of Shell, ch 2, 2 dc in corresponding st in round below next sc; repeat from * around to last Shell, ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of Shell, ch 2, slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 10: Repeat Round 7.

Rounds 9-10: Change to A and repeat Rounds 9-10.

Round 11: Change to D and repeat Round 5. Cut D.

Rounds 12-13: Change to A and repeat Rounds 9-10.

Round 14: Change to E and repeat Round 5. Cut E.

Round 15: Change to A and repeat Round 9.

Round 16: Ch 2, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, *dc3tog over next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts; repeat from * 7 (8) more times, slip st in first dc2tog – 36 (40) sts.

Round 17: Ch 2, dc2tog over next 2 sts, *dc in next st, dc3tog over next 3 sts; repeat from * to last st, dc in last st, slip st in first dc2tog – 18 (20) sts.

Round 18: Ch 2, (dc3tog) 6 times, dc in each st to end of round, slip st in first dc3tog. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

FINISHING

Using long tail, weave end through top of last row and pull to close. Secure end. Weave in ends.

With White, make a 4″ [10 cm] diameter pompom. Sew pompom on top of Hat.
