Mod Flower Necklace

Pep up an ordinary top with an irresistible crochet necklace. Vary the number, colors and sizes of flowers for an inspired look.

Required Supplies:

  • AUNT LYDIA’S® Baker’s Cotton: 1 ball each of 621 Green A, 565 Purple B, 529 Turquoise C, 900 Red D and 700 Pink E
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 3.25 mm [US D-3]
  • Yarn needle

Additional Supplies Needed:

16 medium white buttons ½” (13 mm), 8 small white buttons (7/16″ [11 mm]) Safety pins

GAUGE: Large flower = 1½” (3.8 cm) in diameter. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

Necklace measures 30” (76.2 cm) in circumference

Notes

Necklace chain is made in one long piece, then arranged to form loops of different lengths. If a longer or shorter necklace is desired, make chain longer or shorter.

NECKLACE

Chain

With A, make a ch 80” (203 cm) long, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; join with slip st in first slip st, making sure chain is not twisted. Fasten off A. Weave in ends.

Large Flower (make 16 total: 4 each with B, C, D, and E)

Round 1 (Right Side): Leaving a 6” (15 cm) tail, ch 3 (2nd and 3rd ch count as hdc), 9 hdc in 3rd ch from hook; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 – 10 hdc.

Round 2: *(Ch 1, [dc, ch 2] 3 times) in next hdc (petal made)**, slip st in next hdc; repeat from * 3 more times; repeat from * to ** once; join with a slip st in first slip st – 5 petals. Fasten off. Weave in ending tail.

Small Flower (make 8 total: 2 each with B, C, D, and E)

Round 1 (Right Side): Leaving a 6” (15 cm) tail, ch 2, *(slip st, ch 2, dc, ch 2) in 2nd ch from hook (petal made); repeat from * 4 more times in same ch; join with slip st in first slip st – 5 petals. Fasten off. Weave in ending tail.

ASSEMBLY

On a flat surface, loop chain around to form 3 loops, 23” (58.5 cm), 27” (68.5 cm) and 30” (76 cm) in circumference. Pin top of loops together. Arrange half of flowers along 3 loops of chain, as shown in assembly diagram and photo, or as desired. Pin each flower to chain for placement. With center 6” (15 cm) tail, sew flowers to chain and buttons on right side of flowers. Repeat with other flowers of same size and buttons on opposite side of chain. If desired, sew chains together at top of necklace.
