Sophie’s Shoulder Bag

Crochet a one-of-a-kind designer bag with this unique yarn! Since the yarn is hand spun from actual silk sari fabric, there are variations in every beautiful hank.

Pattern #: LW4432

Designed by: Ann Regis

Project Type: Accessories

Skill Level: Easy

Required Supplies:

  • RED HEART® Boutique Silk Sari™: 2 balls 9934 Dazzling
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 8mm [US L-11]
  • Yarn needle
  • 2 stitch markers

Additional Supplies Needed:

9” x 17” (23 x 43 cm) piece of fabric (optional for lining), sewing needle and matching thread (optional for lining)

GAUGE: 8 sts = 4” (10 cm); 4 rows = 4” (10 cm) in double crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Bag measures 8” wide x 7½” long (20.5 x 19 cm), closed and with edging.

Special Stitch

dc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Notes

1. Bag and flap are made in one piece worked back and forth in rows.

2. Due to uneven texture of the yarn, your gauge may not match exactly.

BAG

Ch 16.

Row 1 (right side): Dc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch do not count as a st) and in each ch across, turn—15 dc.

Rows 2–16: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each dc across, turn. Do not fasten off. Place marker on each end of last row.

Optional: lay piece on fabric. Add ½” (1.5 cm) seam allowance on all edges and cut fabric for lining.

Flap

Rows 17–20: Repeat Row 2.

Rows 21–23: Ch 2, dc in first dc, dc2tog, dc in each dc to last 3 dc, dc2tog, dc in last dc, turn—9 dc.

Fasten off.

FINISHING

Fold piece so first row is aligned with marked row and pin side edges together.

Edging and Half Strap

Ch 10.

Row 1: Working through both thicknesses, insert hook at lower edge near fold, sc evenly across ends of rows; work as many ch as needed for 30” (76 cm) strap, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, slip st in each sc along edge, slip st in last 10 ch. Fasten off. Knot beginning ch-10 into a small ball. Turn bag to other side and repeat Row 1 for 2nd edging and half strap.

Lining

Draw tails to wrong side of bag to minimize weaving in.

With right sides together, fold lining fabric in half with short edges matching. Leaving ½” (12.7 mm) seam allowance, sew side seams. If desired, press open side seams. Turn top edges to wrong side along seam allowance and press. Insert lining in bag with wrong sides together and sew top edge of lining to inner edge of bag.

Weave in ends. Tie ends of half straps together to desired length of shoulder strap.

ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain; dc = double crochet; st(s) = stitch(es); [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified; * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated.
