  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 11.5mm [US P-16]

Additional Supplies Needed:
Large plastic canvas needle, 1¾ yd (1.6 m) purchased fabric, sewing needle (or optional sewing machine) and matching thread, large bag of polyester fiberfill, straight pins

GAUGE: 6 sts = 4” (10 cm); 3 rows = 3½” (9 cm) in double crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Pillow cover measures 30” wide x 27” long (76 x 68.5 cm), without insert.
Special Stitch
InV-st (Inverted V-Stitch) (worked over 3 stitches) = Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), skip next stitch, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.
Notes
1. Pillow cover is one piece worked back and forth in rows. Cover is folded and sewn on 3 sides to encase insert.
2. Pillow insert is sewn by hand or machine from purchased fabric and stuffed with polyester fiberfill.

Row 1 (right side): Dc in 4th chain from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc) and in each remaining ch, turn—91 dc.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in next st, *ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, ch 1, skip next st, dc in last 2 sts, turn— 47 dc and 44 ch-1 spaces.
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in each ch-1 space across, skip next dc, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—91 dc.
Rows 4 and 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
Rows 6 and 7: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 8: Ch 3, dc in next st, skip next st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, *skip next 2 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, skip next st, dc in next st, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—62 dc and 29 ch-1 spaces.
Row 9: Ch 3, dc in next st, 3 dc in each ch-1 space across, dc in next st, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—91 sts.
Rows 10 and 11: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 12: Ch 3, skip next st, dc in next st, working in front of st just made, dc in skipped st, *ch 1, skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, working in front of st just made, dc in 2nd skipped st; repeat from * to beginning ch, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—62 dc and 29 ch-1 spaces.
Row 13: Ch 3, dc in each st and ch-1 space across, turn—91 dc.
Rows 14 and 15: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 16: Ch 3, dc in next st, ch 1, In V-st, *ch 2, InV-st; repeat from * across to last 2 sts, ch 1, dc in next st, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—4 dc, 29 In V-sts, 2 ch-1 spaces, and 28 ch-2 spaces.
Row 17: Ch 3, dc in next st, dc in first ch-1 space, 3 dc in each ch-2 space across, 2 dc in last ch-1 space, dc in next st, dc in top of beginning ch, turn—91 sts.
Rows 18 and 19: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn.
Rows 20–23: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 twice.
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
FINISHING
Pillow Insert
With right sides together, fold fabric in half width-wise and pin to hold layers while cutting. Measure and mark 27½” (70 cm) wide and 30½” (77.5 cm) long; cut to these measurements. Sew with a ½” (1.5 cm) seam allowance, leaving an opening for stuffing. Turn right side out and stuff evenly to desired firmness. Fold in remaining seam allowances on open edges and sew closed.
Cover
With right sides together, fold cover in half width-wise and pin together matching stitches. With ending tail, whip stitch across 2 edges of cover. Stuff with pillow insert and sew remaining edge closed. Weave in ends.
