Designer Kathleen Stuart wrote: ” I originally saw this pattern stitch used in a ripple afghan but I changed it a bit to make it a straight row pattern. The overlapping of stitches makes the dishcloth quite sturdy. The border is done in 2 colors because I ran out of yarn, but I have seen quilts edged in different fabrics and I liked the idea!”

Skill: Easy
Size:
About 8½” square.
Materials:
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn: Blue – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 46 m) Orange – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 46 m) Green – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 46 m) (Lily Sugar ‘n Cream – Hot Blue, Hot Orange, Mod Green)
Crochet Hook:
Size J-8 (5.00 mm)

To Change Colors
Work last stitch before color change to last step, with new color, yo and pull new color through remaining lps on hook. Drop unused color to wrong side. Do not work over unused color.

JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

Color Sequence Starting with Row 2: [2 rows Orange, 2 rows Blue, 2 rows Green] 3 times, ending with 3 rows Orange (not counting border).

DISHCLOTH
Row 1:
(Right Side) With Orange, ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook, [sc in next ch] across. (29 sc)
Row 2:
Following color sequence, ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, [ch 2, skip next 3 sc, 2 dc in next sc] across to last 4 sc, ch 2, skip next 3 sc, dc in last sc.
Row 3:
Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, [working over next ch-2, work 2 dc into center sc of skipped 3-sc group on Row 1, ch 2, skip next 2 dc] across, ending with 2 dc worked over ch into next center sc of skipped 3-sc group in Row 1, sc in last sc; change to Blue.
Row 4:
With Blue, ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, [ch 2, skip next 2 dc, working over ch-2, 2 dc between the corresponding 2 dc one row below] across, ending with ch 2, skip next 2 dc, sc in last sc.
Row 5
: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, [working over ch-2, 2 dc between corresponding 2 dc one row below, ch 2, skip next 2 dc] across, ending with 2 dc over ch-2 between corresponding 2 dc one row below, sc in last sc; change to next color.
Rows 6-21
: Following Color Sequence, rep Rows 4-5, ending with Orange. Do not change color at the end of Row 21.
Row 22:
Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, [sc in next 2 dc, working over ch-2 , 2 dc between 2 dc one row below] across, ending with sc in next 2 dc, sc in last sc. Change to Blue in last st.

Border
Rnd 1:
With Blue, ch 1, turn, 3 sc in last sc worked (corner), sc evenly around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2:
Sl st in next sc (center sc of corner), (ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc) in same sc, [ch 1, skip next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc] around; join with sl st to first dc.
(You may change yarn after second side corner if you follow the photo – I ran out of yarn, so I thought it would be a fun way to finish the border.)
