This Diamonds and Rust dishcloth was designed by Karen Daniel. Karen wrote: “I am also a folksinger and people always say I sound like Joan Baez. So it is fitting I named this design after one of her hit songs, “Diamonds and Rust”. I design some of my own hats & scarves but this is my first real submission. Size: About 9½” wide and 9” long
Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn: Varigated (A) – 1½ oz, 71 yd (42 g, 64 m) (Peaches & Crème – Desert Sunset) Sport Weight Yarn: Silver (B) – ¾ oz, 87 yd (21 g, 80 m) (Vanna’s Glamour – Silver)
Crochet Hook: Size G-6 (4.25 mm)
Special Stitches
Double Crochet Cluster (dc-cl): 3 dc in st or space indicated.
Picot: Ch 3, sl st in last sc worked.
DISHCLOTH
Note: this pattern involves working with two different yarn weights, using the same size hook. You may want to work the heavier weight yarn a little more tightly, and the lighter weight yarn a little more loosely.
Row 1: (Right Side) With A, ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across. (29 sc)
Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (29 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc) across. (15 sc, 14 ch-1 sps) Finish off A and weave in ends.
Row 5: With right side facing, join B with sc in first sc, sc in same sc, (dc-cl in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc) across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. (14 dc-cl, 17 sc) Finish off B and weave in ends.
Row 6: With wrong side facing, join A with sl st to first sc, ch 3 (counts as first dc), skip next sc, (sc in center dc of dc-cl, dc in next sc) across to last dc-cl, sc in center dc of next dc-cl, skip next sc, dc in last sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (29 sc)
Rows 8-9: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (29 sc)
Row 10: Rep Row 4.
Row 11: With right side facing, join B with sc to first sc, (2 sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2) across to last ch-1 sp, 2 sc in last ch-1 sp, sc in last sc. (30 sc, 13 ch-2 sps) Finish off B and weave in ends.
Row 12: With wrong side facing, join A with sc to first sc, (ch 1, sc in next ch-2 sp) across to last 3 sc, ch 1, skip next 2 sc, sc in last sc.
Rows 13-15: Rep Rows 7-9.
Rows 16-21: Rep Rows 10-15.
Rows 22-27: Rep Rows 4-9.
At the end of Row 27, DO NOT FINISH OFF.
Edging
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 3 sc in last sc worked, * working in sides of rows, evenly sc across *; working in unused lps of starting ch, 3 sc in first ch, (sc in next ch) across to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; rep from * to *; working in Row 27, 3 sc in first sc, (sc in next sc) across; join with sl st to first sc. Finish off A and weave in ends.
Rnd 2: With right side facing, join B with sc to center sc of corner 3-sc group, 2 sc in same sc, * sc in next 2 sc, (sc, picot, sc) in next sc; rep from * evenly around, working 3 sc in each corner. Finish off and weave in ends.

I didn’t have the sparkly yarn specified – so I used 2 strands of thin crochet cotton instead… it worked just fine. I LOVE the colors…. really unusual and pretty 🙂
