If you are anything like me you can never have enough bags! Bags are great to store craft projects. They are also a great way to keep from using the plastic bags at the grocery store. Bringing your own hand crafted bag to the grocery store or the local farmers market, is a very Eco friendly way to help save our planet.
The Great Big Bag is quick and easy to create using 3 strands of crochet cotton thread held together as one. You could also use one strand of worsted weight yarn to create a similar gauge.

Materials: Size 10 Crochet Thread: 6 balls Buttercup (or color of choice), 1 yard material for lining; Cardboard (for starching).
Note: 3 strands of thread are worked together throughout. Alternatively, single-strand Worsted Weight yarn may be used.
Crochet Hook: Size F-5 or G-6 (3.75 or 4.25 mm)
JOINING WITH SC
When instructed to join with sc, begin with sl knot on hook, insert hook in st or sp indicated, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

HANDLE
Row 1: (Right Side) Starting at short edge, with 3 strands held together, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (sc in next ch) across. (7 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Repeat Row 2 until Handle measures 19 inches. Finish off and weave in ends.
TIES (Make 2)
Using 3 strands of thread held together, make 2 lengths of chains each 27 inches long.
FINISHING
– Fasten handle in position placing each end about 1½ inches down from top border on inside of foundation as illustrated.
– Cut cardboard according to chart. Bring the 2 straight edges together and fasten with scotch tape. Fasten circle to bottom in same manner.
– Starch Directions: Wet article and place in towel to remove excess moisture. Dissolve 1 cup starch in ¾ cup of cold water. Boil about 1¼ cups of water, remove from flame, then slowly stir the starch mixture into boiling water, stirring constantly. Place back on flame until it thickens. As soon as starch is cool enough to handle, dip article and squeeze starch through it thoroughly. Wring out extra starch. The article should be wet with starch but there should be none in the spaces. Place bag over cardboard foundation and leave until thoroughly dry.
– Lining: Cut lining inch larger for seams all around than cardboard foundation. Seam straight edges together. Sew circle to bottom of bag. Cut a strip of material 10 inches x 38 inches. Sew the 2 small edges together. Turn down material 1¾ inches from 1 free edge on wrong side of material. Fold under ¼ inch and sew along last folded edge. Then sew ½ inch above this edge for beading. Cut 2 openings on right side of beading at opposite ends for ties. Sew free edge to other section of lining gathering as necessary. Place lining in bag and sew in position. Draw Ties through beading starting each at opposite side. Finish ends with a knot or metal tips as illustrated.
